We couldn’t figure out what exactly was the problem until we talked with a barista who said, “Are you sure you are using the right amount of coffee grounds per cup”?  He then explained that lots of people use too much or too little coffee and that it is the main reason why coffee at home doesn’t taste as good as it does in a café. Most of you probably know about the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA). In case you somehow missed it, we will say that it is a membership-based trade association. It represents thousands of professionals involved in the coffee business worldwide.

This association is known, among other things, as a developer of the Golden ratio – a rule that enables everyone to brew a perfect cup of coffee.  Generally, the coffee to water ratio should be between 1:15 and 1:18. In simple terms, it means that you should add one gram of coffee for every 15 -18 ml of water.  In terms of how much ground coffee to use per cup, SCAA claims that if you are following the American standard, you need 0.36 ounces or 10 grams of coffee per 6 ounces (180 ml) cup. The European standard is 7 grams of coffee for 125 ml of water.
